In the announcement, the studio also makes it official that Michael Shannonwill take the role of General Zod, Superman's megalomania nemesis from Krypton. The character will make its big screen appearance once again after it was portrayed by Terence Stamp in 1980's "Superman II".
Addressing the villainous character, director Zack Snyder says Zod has an important part in the film. He states, "Zod is not only one of Superman's most formidable enemies, but one of the most significant because he has insights into Superman that others don't. Michael is a powerful actor who can project both the intelligence and the malice of the character, making him perfect for the role."
Shannon is best known for his portrayal of John Givings in "Revolutionary Road". Through his role in the film, he was nominated for Best Supporting Actor in 2008 Academy
The new "Superman" project has Henry Cavill taking the lead role of Clark Kent a.k.a Superman, and Amy Adams stars as Lois Lane, the main female character. Taking the supporting roles are the likes of Diane Laneand Kevin Costner. Written by David S. Goyer, the film is expected to make its way out in 2012.
